This blog discusses the rich history and the bright future of the Hegeler Carus Mansion in La Salle, IL. We write about the architectural restoration projects, events, classes, artifacts and history of the house and the family who called it home since 1874.
As we begin a new year, we look back on all we've accomplished in 2012, and plan for 2013. It is important that we thank our Foundation Members, donors, volunteers and friends for all they do to support The Hegeler Carus Foundation in fulfilling our mission to encourage and support cultural activities by restoring and using the Hegeler Carus Mansion, an American center of philosophical, scientific, and religious
dialogue.
People show commitment to The Foundation in many different ways, from introducing friends and family to the Mansion by bringing them for a tour, attending our lectures, concerts and events, sponsoring our events and projects and volunteering time.
Expand our Music at the Mansion program with our weekly Summer Sunset Concert Series
Complete the preservation and repair of the Mansion Foundation and window wells.
Repair and preserve the roof, fascia and soffits over the dining room.
In 2013, we will celebrate the 120th anniversary of the 1893 World's Fair and Columbian Exposition
in Chicago. 1893 was a very exciting year at the Mansion, and a turning point for the entire world. The World's Fair brought about social change, scientific discovery, interfaith dialogue, and fascinating new inventions. Look for special programming to learn more.
We also have some monumental restoration projects planned in 2013. Due to successful fundraising, careful project management, the generosity of Foundation Members as well as pledges from some descendants of the Hegeler and Carus Families, we have started restoring the ground floor "Open Court Hallway," home to Open Court Publishing for more than 70 years. This area will serve as gallery space and provide an accessible viewing area for the Oldest Private Gymnasium in America.
Through a generous family donation, we have achieved the funding necessary to complete the restoration of the main floor Parlor. Upon completion, the Parlor will be known as the Mary Louise Room. We are very excited to be able to complete the restoration of another interior room, and have been challenged to match this donation and restore the dining room as well.
